My Opinion on Homeland Security ...
The current state of Homeland Security is, in my opinion, lacking. There are issues stated on the news with regards to our shipping ports and our porous borders. We must work to fix these outstanding issues so everyone can agree on a sense of true security.
Port security
According to a news release on March 13, 2006, by Connecticut Congressman John B Larson:
“No container should be placed on a ship bound for the United States unless it has been screened for nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons,” Congressman Nadler said. “The Bush Administration has refused to act on this front, and appears content to screen less than 5 percent of the 11 million shipping containers that enter this country every year. That’s appalling.”
Appalling is mild. It is inexcusable and reprehensible! The security of our country, we're told over & over, is at risk and the way we combat these risks is to have spent over $300 Billion on the war for Iraq?! And, how much of these funds would it take to improve our country?
Border security
Our borders between Mexico and the U.S. are more porous than ever. Thankfully, we have the Minutemen volunteers watching our borders and notifying authorities when they see illegal crossings. But, it's not just the illegal aliens crossing in from Mexico that should concern us. According to an article by Lou Dobbs on July 29, 2005:
"And since October [2004], more than 70,000 illegal aliens from countries other than Mexico have been stopped and later released into our country. Talk about a homeland security problem."
When are we going to appropriate money, time and resources in securing our land, as opposed to spending our money and taking our servicemen's time to secure another country's land? When?!
