My Opinion on Iraq (as Iraq stands now) ...
| No matter your stance on what the U.S. should do with regards to stay or withdraw, we all can agree that the current state of Iraq is depressing and dangerous. These numbers are staggering! |

What do Iraqis want?
I personally believe we should allow the Iraqis to vote on whether the United States should stay or withdraw. If they've formed a democracy, then they should have the right to vote. If they want the U.S. to stay, U.S. citizens would hear it first hand and the Arab nations would, as well. If they want the U.S. to withdraw, then we have nothing to fear about leaving, as it would be their wish and not "cutting & running." It's their new democracy; make it their choice.
Let Iraqis vote and tell the World.
Again, this should be the choice of the Iraqi people. If they want us to stay, it sends a message loud and clear to us, the World, and the Arab neighboring countries. Require a 2/3rds FOR the U.S. to stay. Otherwise, we start to withdraw immediately. And, ensure the voting is absolutely legitimate by having the election monitoring managed by The Carter Center. And, finally, set a regular interval [annually?] at which this vote takes place so as to ensure we are, if in fact, still wanted around to help.
If they want us to stay ...
... then the rest of the World will know it. And, with that, maybe we can get our other allies to [finally] step forward to help. Maybe we can get the other Arab countries to back the Iraqis and get the insurgent groups from their countries to stop. But, what we must stop doing is telling the World what the Iraqis want and the Iraqis must tell the World for themselves.
For now, STOP building the 104-Acre U.S. Embassy in Baghdad!
According to an MSNBC article, we are constructing a 104-acre US Embassy complex in Iraq at a cost of one-billion dollars or more. That doesn't sound like we're planning to leave anytime soon, does it? The building of this embassy should cease & desist until the aforementioned voting is completed and the United States is asked to stay. |
